Scoliosis: An abnormal curvature of the spine, with some variations, that take it into sideways curvature.
As an osteopath, I deal with scoliosis regularly in clients, with varying degrees of severity.
Some are temporary, and result from say a sprained ankle offsetting the pelvis and base of spine and deviating it’s curve, or after a whiplash injury that has torn muscles and ligaments, losing the intrinsic support of the spinal structures.
I’ve also spent a lot of time and training dealing with inherent rhythms and growth of the body, and it’s energy systems, as well as helping support the persons ability for homeostasis (balance), and healing. Research for a few years has indicated pineal gland (organ very sensitive to light). and circadian rhythms as being highly related to the deeper postural muscles, and scoliosis development.
From an traditional, or biodynamic osteopaths point of view, this makes sense, as I’m so often dealing with the persons ability to rest, and recover and any tension that is imbalanced, at rest, will manifest quite deeply (think how do you feel with a poor nights sleep when stressed, the body just won’t find a good position!). Anything that affects the functioning of these physiological and anatomical links can be a trigger or causative factor. Traditional/biodynamic osteopathy utilises gentler techniques of working with our self healing mechanisms that can really assist in normal nervous, muscular, skeletal and vascular system health, as well as our viscera (body organs).
